City Politicians Endorse Changes to London's Taxi Bylaw

London’s Community and Protective Services Committee has endorsed some changes to the city’s taxi by-law.

The proposed changes go against what was proposed months ago by London city staff.

If approved, the new bylaw would require dashboard cameras for traditional cabs but not private vehicles for hire such as Uber.

Unlimited surge pricing would be allowed for both Uber and traditional cabs, insurance will be required for all vehicles for hire to protect the public and passengers, and the city will drop a requirement that cars need to be replaced after they reach a certain age.

Staff will report back in January, the city hopes to have a bylaw in place for next March.

A public participation meeting on Uber last month ran for six hours before city politicians referred the issue back to staff.
