Construction is beginning on a new hospital - the first in the city of Vaughan - that will provide advanced health care services to more than 500,000 people.

The $1.3 billion Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital will help patients by providing modern surgical services and operating rooms, advanced diagnostic imaging and other specialized services. The hospital will have 342 beds on opening day. The majority of rooms for patients in acute care will be private.

"Our new hospital will be the first smart hospital in Canada designed through the eyes of the patient,” Altaf Stationwala, president and CEO of Mackenzie Health. “Mackenzie Health’s smart hospital vision will feature fully integrated smart technology, including systems and medical devices that can speak to one another. The health care team will be enabled with actionable information in real time that enhances the delivery of efficient, high quality, patient-centred care.”

Health care professionals at Mackenzie Health will use the most advanced smart technology available to enhance the patient experience. With an integrated picture of a patient’s medical condition, patients will be connected with support beyond the new hospital’s walls - including Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, outpatient clinics, and community physicians - to support a patient’s continuity of care.

This is one of about 35 major hospital projects across the province under construction or in various stages of planning.
