The transition to life in this area is about to get a little easier for nearly 300 newcomers.
Recently, the provincial government announced about $65,000 in funding for Social Enterprise for Canada, to help provide settlement services in Simcoe County and northern York Region.
Money will be used to support a multilingual awareness campaign targeting newcomers and refugees, to help prevent sexual violence and human trafficking, and provide training for settlement workers to help them recognize signs of sexual violence. The funds will also help newcomers find housing, school, employment and language support.
“Organizations like the Social Enterprise are making it easier for newcomers to succeed in their new communities - and that's a great thing,” said Newmarket-Aurora MPP Chris Ballard in a press release. “By giving newcomers the support that they need to succeed we are enriching Canada both socially and economically."
The funding includes support for targeted settlement and integration services for vulnerable populations, such as assistance for at-risk newcomer youth and women.
As part of a two year commitment, the province is investing more than $22.2 million in 117 settlement projects delivered by 98 agencies.
