Huge potential for bicycle trips in GTA

October 11 a new Ryerson University study indicates that up to one-third of all trips made in the GTA could be bicycled. Conducted by investigators Rakim Mitra, Nancy Smith Lea, Ian Cantello and Greggory Hanson, the study finds that 4.35-million daily short trips within the GTA - at 5 kilometres or less - can be made by bicycle, having the potential to remove as many as 716,000 cars off the road.

The findings underscore the need to improve both policy and practice for cycling across the GTA, and will inform the next regional transportation plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
