The proposed Remington Centre in Markham will replace the Markham Village Market with over a million feet of gross floor area—nearly triple that of the existing market—and accommodate about 1,200 retail units in 2.5 storeys.

Staff recommended Development Services Committee approve the site plan application in principle at Monday’s meeting. Staff will continue to work with The Remington Group to address outstanding technical issues, including the design of access driveways onto Steeles and Kennedy Road, finalizing the green infrastructure package and the details of the exterior façade.

The proposal is for 1,157,713 ft 2 of gross floor area, with a gross leasable area of 457, 769 ft 2. The retail units will range in size from 125 to 60,000 ft 2. Kohn Architects has designed the centre to incorporate significant sustainability features, such as geothermal heating and a green roof, and to achieve LEED Silver certification.

Ward 8 councillor Alex Chiu told NRU that that he has been a supporter of the project since day one. Chui said it was a very attractive proposal that would put the area on the map.

“It’s been over five years now [since the initial application], and we’ve been patiently waiting for when [the development] would get started,” he said.

Pleased that the proposal is back on track, Chiu said that the only outstanding issue he has heard about from his constituents’ concerns about traffic to and from the mall, but was hopeful that a solution could be found.

Committee directed staff to report back in about six months.
