Uber Canada granted Toronto taxi brokerage licence

Uber Canada has received a taxi brokerage licence from the City of Toronto, a spokesperson for the ride-sharing company has confirmed.

The city says the brokerage licence does not apply to the UberX platform.

In May, Uber Canada filed for the brokerage licence for its Uber Taxi platform in a move that signalled a shift from its position as a technology company to that of a cab service. But at the time, it did not seek a licence for UberX, a platform where motorists use their own vehicles to pick up paying passengers.

An Uber Canada spokesperson said in a statement Friday that the company “will continue to work with the City of Toronto towards new regulations for ridesharing, which are expected in the coming months.”

Uber users can get a taxi, private car or rideshare through the company’s GPS-enabled app.
