Local home and business owners in King Township may need a cold glass of water to cool off after getting their bill for the necessity this coming year: water will cost just over 10 per cent more in 2016.

The average annual water and wastewater charge for the coming year, if approved by council this Monday night, will be $1,077.22, up from $977.22 last year. That’s a $99.50 increase or exactly a 10.1 per cent increase.

The average monthly bill will be $89.97 a month, a jump from $81.48 monthly in 2015.

Back in November, treasurer Allan Evelyn warned the increases would likely be at least nine per cent annually through 2020 to reflect a request made by the Region of York.

At that same November meeting Mayor Steve Pellegrini said the increase was necessary so that, “whoever consumes the service, needs top pay for it. It won’t be subsidized by tax dollars any longer. There needs to be 100 per cent cost recovery ... and we’re not there yet.”
